Born March 18, 1920, at Wickham, he was the son of the late William Johnny and Rheba Brogan Bennett.
In service to his country he bravely answered the call to protect our freedom during World War II. He was a Bronze Star recipient and combat infantryman with Company B, 71st Infantry, 44th Division, and served in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaign of Austria and Germany, among others. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3110, Oak Hill. Mr. Bennett was retired from Union Carbide Alloys Divison, Alloy WV and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church at Abraham.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, William Blueford Bennett, Robert Wriston Bennett, William Howard "Mike" Bennett and Ronald Bennett; and two sisters, Margaret Radford and Marcella Blankenship.
Survivors include his former wife and dearest friend, Josephine Bennett of Oak Hill; a son, Russell E. Bennett Jr. of Charleston; two loved grandsons, Russell E. Bennett III and Jason Blair Bennett of Weirton, WV; two cherished great-grandchildren, Matthew and Josafina; and a brother, Stephen R. Bennett of Raleigh, WV.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. John W. Richmond Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Goodson Cemetery No. 1, Bragg.
Friends may call 2:30 p.m. until time of service Sunday.
