According to legend, John E Perret immigrated to the Black Hills from Wales at the age of 17. John stood 4ft 3in tall. He had a long beard and was know for his signature buckskin wardrobe which can be seen in most photographs. He staked his claim near the gulches of the Iron Creek and Potato Creek. The prospector became known as Potato Creek Johnny after a lucky find. He found a gold nugget that weighed 7-3/4 troy ounces in the shape of a leg. It was believed to be one of the largest nuggets taken from that area. He sold the piece to W.E. Adams for $250.00.

He is laid to rest near Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.
