Matthews joined the U.S. State Department in 1924 and served for almost 40 years, rising to become Director of the Department's Office of European Affairs (including time as advisor to Presidents Roosevelt and Truman at the 1945 Yalta and Potsdam Conferences), and retiring after serving as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden (1947-50), the Netherlands (1953-57) and Austria (1957-62). He self-published his "Memories of Passing Era" in 1973; see also "H. Freeman Matthews, Diplomat since 1920s," New York Times (Oct. 21, 1986), D31.
