OTHO-Wayne E. Laird, 69, of Otho, died Saturday morning at Trinity Regional Hospital following a short illness.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Gunderson Funeral Chapel, with Rev. James Zellers, pastor of Otho-Kalo Community church, officiating. burial will be in Otho Cemetery, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 1856. Visitation is after 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Adeline; daughters, Paulette Bard, Lincoln, Neb., Jackie Anderson, Janesville, Wis., Jill Clabaugh, Otho, Terri Attig, Fort Dodge, and Jana Danielson, Fort Dodge; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Jack Laird and Douglas Laird, both of Fort Dodge, and Frank Laird, Moline, Ill.; and sister, Judy VanKooten, Omaha, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Wayne E. Laird was born June 23, 1923, at Kalo. He attended Otho schools, graduating from Otho High School in 1941. He then joined the U. S. Navy and was later transferred into 3rd Maine Division. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He was wounded during the battle of Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart. Following the war, he returned to Otho and began farming. He married Adeline Fiferlick in 1950. The couple made their home in the Otho area. In 1965, he went to work for the U. S. government in the Department of Agriculture. He retired in 1984 from that department.

He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a member of VFW Post 1856 and a member of the Otho Community Club.
