Col. Edward Sawyer came to the Michigan Territory in the Fall of 1835 to build a log house and clear six acres of land in the Grand Blanc country of Southern Genesee County. In the Spring of 1836, he brought his family to their new home in the wilderness. Mary and her sister Elizabeth were unprepared for the hardships of pioneer life and did not survive the first year.
