ROBERT HELVEY DEAD
VETERAN OF TWO WARS DIES AT LOGANSPORT SATURDAY
Word was received here some days ago of the death of Robert Helvey at Logansport on last Saturday. The deceased, who was known throughout this section as "Bob" Helvey, was one of the oldest settlers in Chester township and a man who could be truly called a pioneer. Accurate information in regard to his life's history is not at hand and strange enough none of his relatives in this vicinity have more than a hearsay knowledge from which we have been able to compile this sketch.

Robert Helvey was the son of Champion Helvey, and was born somewhere in Ohio. His father was one of the very first settlers in the vicinity of what is now North Manchester, having located on the river a little northeast of where the college now stands about 1835 or 1836. At that time Robert Helvey was a boy of eight or ten years of age and his life has ever since been identified with the growth of this community.

At the age of sixteen he enlisted as a soldier in the Mexican War and served through that conflict. In 1863 he enlisted in the Seventh Calvary in the War of the Rebellion and served till the close of the war. His death removes the last Mexican War veteran from this section and at the same time a historic character in the community.

Mr. Helvey was twice married and raised a large family of children, five by his first wife and six by his second. He was about 76 or 77 yeas of age at the time of his death. Fort some time past he has made his home with a daughter residing in Logansport. The information received here is to the effect that he had a stroke of paralysis last Friday and died from its effects on Saturday.

His remains were buried at that place, the funeral being held on Monday. Owing to some mistake the relatives here were not informed in time to attend the funeral.
