South Carolina became the first state to
declare its secession from the United States.

Capt. William Hunter died at his home on Golden Creek on last Saturday the 15th inst., aged 80 years and was buried the Sunday following at Old Liberty city cemetery.

Capt. Hunter came from Pennsylvania when twenty two years of age, married and raised a large family.

He was a good citizen, a model farmer and a Mason in good standing which order officiated at his funeral in the presence of a large concourse of friends.

Capt. Hunter served gallantly in the Confederate army and since the war has lived a quiet and industrious life, being identified with many movements in the upbuilding of the country.
