Son of Hunter and Lizzie. Born in Chefoo, China. Died by drowning.
A very sad accident occurred at Leatherwood last Friday, between the hours of 4 and 5 p.m., by which Merle Corbett, son of Rev. Hunter Corbett, Missionary in China, and grandson of Ross M. Corbett, well-known throughout this county, was drowned. Merle and Jimmy Henry went to the dam to see the flood, and while standing on a large rock it gave way, precipitating them into the strong current. Jimmy floated about six rods and by some means came to shore and was saved. Merle was found two hours afterwards about sixty rods further down the stream, lodged in a tree. He was buried at Leatherwood church on Sabbath, the funeral being the largest ever known in the vicinity.

The friends will extend their heartfelt sympathy to the grandparents, with whom he has made his home for the past eight years, with the sisters, Fannie and Bessie, and with the father in China, who will not hear the sad news for many long days.

Merle was a bright promising boy, a favorite among his schoolmates, and was 15 years, 7 months and 27 days old.
