Daughter of Elisha and Nancy Ann (Fenton) Paine; Wife of William Worth Ray whom she married on January 31, 1850 in Bond County, Illinois; Mother of Mahala Ellen (Kloster) Ray, Elisha Ray, Nancy Jane (File) Ray, Elizabeth Ellen (Gum) Ray, Hester Rebecca (Ray) Peterson, William Anderson Ray, Andrew Jackson Ray and James Madison Ray.Mrs. Matilda T. Ray died February 2, 1910 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. I.D. Gum in Pocahontas. Mrs. Ray's maiden name was Matilda Paine. She was born on the old Paine farm six miles west of Greenville, July 4, 1832. On January 29, 1849 she was married to William W. Ray and to the union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters, all of whom survive, except one son, Elisha, who died December 18, 1904. Those living to mourn the departure of their mother are Mrs. Mahala Klostar of Henrietta, Texas, Mrs. Elizabeth Gum of Pocahontas, Mrs. Nancy Wall and Mrs. Rebecca Peterson of near Pocahontas and Andrew Ray of near Old Ripley. The father died about 40 years ago. One sister, Mrs. Albert of near Greenville is also living and is the last of 11 children of the Paine family.
