Jay Dee Patton, the second of seven children, graduated from Hume Fogg High School, Nashville, TN and attended Sewanee University, Sewanee, TN on a football scholarship. He was married to Florence "Billie" Boward Patton of Staunton, Virginia. They had one child and two grandchildren.
After the war, Jay Dee returned to Richmond, Virginia and set up his own specialized printing business. He was an avid tennis player and also refereed college football games, including Army-Navy games in Philadelphia.
