An academic criminologist and the founding director of the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge. He arrived in Cambridge in the late 1930s as a refugee. During World War II he established the Department of Criminal Science in the Faculty of Law, and in 1959 he became the first Wolfson Professor of Criminology. He was knighted in 1970.

In 1933 he married Irena (Ira) Szereszewska; there were no children of the marriage; Radzinowicz's first marriage ended in divorce in 1955. On 16 June 1958 he married Mary Ann Nevins (b. 1924), a Milton expert and fellow of Girton College, Cambridge, daughter of Arthur Seymour Nevins, a brigadier-general in the United States Army. They had a son and a daughter. This marriage was dissolved in 1979.
On 26 July 1979 he married Isolde Klarmann (b. 1915), widow of Professor Adolf Klarmann, scholar of German literature at the University of Pennsylvania, and daughter of Professor Emil Doernenburg, also a scholar of German literature.
