Leta L. Weddle, 92 of Wenatchee, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2002.

Leta was born July 10, 1909, to Claude and Bertha Barker in Ritzville. Her early childhood years were spent in Tonasket, where her parents had homesteaded on Barker Mountain. She attended school at Anglin, riding her horse every day to school. She graduated from Tonasket High School in 1926. She loved the farm and admitted she would walk two miles to get her horse to ride one mile.

She attended nurses' training at the Deaconess School of Nursing in Wenatchee, graduating in 1929. She then, along with Ruth Lewis, managed and operated the first hospital in Tonasket, under the medical direction of Dr. Bevis. Leta was always a "caregiver" -- taking care of anyone needing her, not only her children, parents and patients but she helped deliver many of the babies in the Okanogan Valley. She never quit being a "nurse."

During the time she was at Tonasket, she met and married James W. Justice. After several moves, they returned to Wenatchee, where they operated a store/service station on Wenatchee Avenue for several years.

In 1949, she, along with her three children, moved back to Tonasket, where she worked at St. Martins Hospital until she and J. Carman Weddle fell in love and were married in Feb. 1958. They both loved their extended family and delighted in sharing special times with their 15 grandchildren.

They continued to live in Tonasket until 1971, when they retired and moved to Wenatchee. They enjoyed growing a large garden and delighted in sharing the fruits of their labors with family and friends. Carman made a large water wheel and pond and Leta raised many goldfish, calling them each by name. Their large backyard was a food stop and "bath house" for many migratory birds.

Leta had many hobbies, which included sewing and knitting, making afghans for each of her five children and various baby clothes and blankets for her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Canning was also one of her favorite hobbies.

Leta was preceded in death by her husband, Carman in 1993, her parents, Claude and Bertha Barker, brother Donald Barker and sister, Betty Barth.

She is survived by Robert (Sharon) Justice of Henderson, NV, Marguerite (Myles) Phipps of Warren, PA, Karen Halvorson of Wenatchee, Tim (Candy) Justice of Camano Island and Eleanor McLeod of Othello; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be conducted at the graveside at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the Wenatchee Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Central Washington Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. and on Monday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
