Jacob Bechtell was my 5th great grandfather. He was born most likely in Frederick County, Maryland, to George and Hannah Bechtell, the oldest of three sons. His mother died when the boys were small and his father died shortly thereafter, when Jacob was about six. After Hannah's death, George indentured his sons out to learn trades until they were 21 years old. Jacob and his brother George were sent to live with David Mullendore, a wheelwright. Jacob married Charlotte Koontz on 18 Sep 1811 in Frederick County. They had five known children who lived to adulthood -- probably more, since their births are spaced out over a 19 year interval. Sometime between 1830 and 1840, Jacob moved to Fairfield County, OH, where he died on 16 May 1867. Jacob's son, Rev. Jacob D. Bachtel, was a noted figure in the United Brethren in Christ Church, the subject of a book written in 1868 shortly after his death called "The Life and Labors of Rev. Jacob Bachtel, of the Parkersburg Annual Conference, United Brethren in Christ."
