Sidney DeWitt Jr., 85, of Toccoa died March 15, 2009, at his home.

A native of Elbert County, he was a son of the late Sidney Ray DeWitt Sr. and Oweda Roberson DeWitt. He was a graduate of Nancy Hart School and had special training in radar communications and electrical engineering. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre in the Philippines and New Guinea with the 3367th Signal Service Battalion. He was a member of Toccoa VFW Post 4346. He was retired after 40 years of service with Hart Electric Corporation, retiring as a supervisor in the Toccoa office. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Fannie and Arthur Blanchet and Darcus Little; a brother, George DeWitt; a sister-in-law, Mary DeWitt; and a stepdaughter, Deborah Lacy Garrett.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Jarrett DeWitt of the home; a daughter, Vickie Keel of Gainesville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Sharon DeWitt of Dacula and Stanley and Nancy DeWitt of Lawrenceville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Loretta and Dick Garrett and Mary and Lindy Worley, all of Elberton; a brother, William DeWitt of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren; a step-grandson; 11 great-grandchildren; a step-great-granddaughter; and a step great-great-grandson.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the chapel of Whitlock Mortuary in Toccoa with the Rev. Jerrell Beatty and the Rev. Geter Owens officiating. Entombment was in Stephens Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Pallbearers were Roger Campbell, Butch Payne, Dwayne Chastain, Davis Bailey, Steve Cheek, Bobby Cash and Fred Smith. Employees and former employees of Hart Electric Corporation served as honorary escorts.

Whitlock Mortuary in Toccoa was in charge of arrangements.
