The son of James Davidson (b. 1725, d. 1794) and Mary Catherine (McConnell) Davidson (b. 1741, d. 1801). Daniel Davidson was an ensign in the Revolutionary War, enlisting from Washington County, Virginia in Morgan's Riflemen. He and his brother James Davidson, Jr. both served as officers at the Battle of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Daniel Davidson, Sr. left Scott County around 1800-1801 and settled on the North Fork of the Kentucky River in pre-sent Clay County, Kentucky.
He was first married to a Sarah White (b. 1758, d. 1820) in 1773 and then to a Margaret Cope Miller (b. 1758, d.1782) in 1777. The father of Mary Polly Davidson (b. 1774, d, 1850), John Madison Davidson (b. 1777, d. 1850),Daniel Davidson Jr. (b. 1789, d. 1867), James Davidson (b. 1784, d. 1868) and Daniel Davidson (b. 1789).
