Dorithy Maurine Bench Ohran, 87, our loving mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday July 03, 2005 at Orem Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of causes incident to age.
Maurine was born on August 26, 1917 in Salina, Utah to Harold Wallace and Chestina Crane Bench. She married her sweetheart, Bruce Wallace Ohran on January 15, 1938. Married for sixty-six years, Wallace and Maurine were devoted companions who showed great love to each other, to their children, grandchildren and friends. When Maurine was eighteen months old, her father died of influenza, a world-wide epidemic in 1918.
She had one sister, Fawn (Harwood) and two brothers, Boyd and Myrl. Later her mother married Niels Jensen, and other siblings, LaVona (Ness), Doyle and Don were born. After graduating from North Sevier High School, Maurine attended Utah State University for one year. She washed shirts and cooked meals to support herself.
The following year she moved to the San Francisco Bay area and became a medical assistant. She met her future husband, Wally, at the doctor s office. Maurine was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a devoted Primary worker, serving in many positions including ward and stake primary president. In later years, she kept merit badge records for the scouting program. She loved and encouraged her scouts.
In her fifties, she took up golf and played countless rounds with friends at the Riverside Country Club. She accumulated numerous trophies and made a hole-in-one twice. She was a grandmother to nineteen children. Many of them lived on the same street, but she was "grandma" to every child in the neighborhood and always had a cookie for any child who stopped by. She was a member of the Edgemont 19th Ward for over thirty years and made many friends. For the past four and a half years, she resided at The Court at Jamestown Assisted Living Center.
The family wished to express their thanks to the devoted and loving staff members at Jamestown, especially Mary Robinson, and visiting nurse and friend, Kathy Marsden. We want to acknowledge the tender and compassionate care and family support provided by Orem Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Alpine Hospice.
The family is deeply appreciative of Blanca Inman who gave daily care with much love to both Maurine and Wally until his passing in 2004. Maurine is survived by her children, James (Ann) Ohran, Richard (Maralee) Ohran all of Provo, Utah; and Linda (Kent Soderquist) of Salt Lake City, Utah; eighteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; a sister, LaVona Ness and a brother, Doyle Jensen. Maurine s greatest love was her family and she gave love freely to all. She is preceded in death by one sister, three brothers and a grand-daughter.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 8, 2005 at 11:00 a.m., at the Edgemont 19th Ward LDS Chapel, 300 West 4800 North, Provo. Friends may call at the Ward Chapel, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., prior to services. Interment, Orem City Cemetery. Services under the direction of Berg Mortuary of Provo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Perpetual Education Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
