Lois Anna McDonald was born in Iowa, the youngest of four children of Thomas McDonald and his wife Ann "Annie" Eliza Byers. In 1880 the family lived in Seventy Six Township, Washington County, Iowa.

Lois was over 30 when she married Washington Ernest Likens in 1892. They had an only child, Howard McDonald Likens, before getting divorced after three years of marriage on 02 Apr 1895.

After the divorce Lois and her son moved in with her widowed mother Annie (Byers) McDonald. Their three-man household in the 1900 census of Washington City, Iowa had a couple of anomalies: possibly trying to escape the stigma of divorce at the time, Lois said she was widowed (which she was not), and also used an alternate name for herself and her son: Lois kept her first name but now called her son Donald and both used the surname "Larkin."

They later moved on to Colorado. By the 1910 census of Fremont County, Colorado Lois had reverted to the Likens surname. She also came to use her maiden name, McDonald, as a middle name. In 1920 Lois, 58, was living in Colorado Springs with her 27 year old son Donald B. Likens and family (now married with wife Mae and daughter Dorothy, three).

Lois died in Colorado in 1939.
