The family story is that "Herschel" was at the river with his friend and cousin John Franklin Wyatt, Jr. on 28 June 1903. John got caught in the swift current of the river and was drowning. Herschel tried to save him, but both young men drowned.
Herschel was buried in the Wyatt Cemetery, located at Hwy 53 JCT Hwy 70N in Chestnut Mound, Smith County, Tennessee.
