John was the son of Thomas Engram and Maggie V. Peterson Stewart and the husband of Sarah McElroy Stewart who he married April 10, 1915.

John J. Stewart, 85, a former West Cape May mayor and councilman, died July 3, at the Swainton Nursing Home. Mr. Stewart was also a charter and a 58 year member of the West Cape May Volunteer Fire Company. Mr. Stewart, of 125 Emerald Avenue was born in Cape May and was a painting contractor in the Cape May area for 60 years. He also owned and operated a paint and hardware store in Cape May. He was appointed to the Borough Council in June 1930 and became Mayor in January 1933. Mr. Stewart served as Mayor until 1935 and on council until 1938. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cape May. Mr. Stewart is survived by two sons, James C. of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Thomas of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Edna Dickinson of West Cape May, Dorothy LeGates of Fishing Creek; and Betty Cain of Seminole, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Services were held in the Joh C. Sudak Funeral Home, Cape May, with the Rev. Willard Sirman of the First United Methodist Church officating. Burial was in Cold Spring.
