Sergeant-Major Ferguson served the USMC from 1917 to 1946, making him both a WWI and WWII combat veteran. During WWI he was awarded both the Army Distinguised Service Cross, the Navy Cross, the Silver Star with one oak leave cluster, the French Croix de Guerre with one bronze star, the Marine Corps Good Conduct medal, the WWI Victory medal with Aisne, Aisne-Marne, Champagne-Marne, St.Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Defensive Sector battle clasps, and the Expert Rifleman's badge. His Navy Cross citation was signed by Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, and reads"
"For extraordinary heroism in action near Villemontry, France, November 10, 1918. Corporal Ferguson and a companion went out ahead of the line and silenced a machine-gun which threatened to hold up the advance of his company".
During WWII Ferguson was assigned to both the USS Fuller and the USS Crescent City, making him eligiable for the WWII Victory medal, the National Defense Service medal, the American Defense Service medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with two service stars.
