Velma C. Cole, 91, formerly of 429 S. Clinton St., died early Friday March 20, 2009 at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where she had been a patient since Jan. 8.

She worked as a store clerk for several Carthage businesses.

Born Oct. 8, 1917, in Utica, daughter of Harry B. and Sarah B. Smith Jones, she graduated from Beaver Falls High School. She married Herbert W. "Punky" Cole on April 25, 1943, at St. James Catholic Church. He died Oct. 19, 2006.

She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a former member of the Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary. She had enjoyed camping.

Surviving are three sons and their wives, David and Kristine and Richard and Dale, all of Lowville, and Dennis and Sherry, Oswego; another daughter-in-law, Pamela Cole, Carthage; three sisters, Shirley Hack, Arizona, and Dorothy Jones and Gwen Hack, both of Beaver Falls, 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A son, Donn, died Dec. 12. A brother, Harry Jones, and a grandson also died before her.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home. Burial will be in New St. James Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In place of flowers, donations may be made to the Carthage Area Rescue Squad or the Auxiliary of Bassett-Baxter American Legion Post 789, 415 West St., Carthage, N.Y. 13619.
