On some documents, Joseph's middle name is listed as 'Edward' and in some, 'Edwin'.
Joseph's grave marker lists him as "J. Edward Perdew" so that is what I am going with!

*Note regarding Joseph Perdew's middle name:
For years, I believed, like most researchers of this branch of the family, that Joseph's middle name was 'Edward' because that is the way he is listed on P.4 of the Genealogy of One Branch of The Hoskinson Family, compiled by Alice H. Wooldridge.
He is also listed as 'Edward' in the 1870, 1880 and 1930 U. S. censuses as well as in the CA. Death Index, his obituary, his death certificate, an 1899 newspaper article (see below) - and the 'Acknowledgments' page of the book, 'Light Over the Mountain'.

However, on his son, Earnest Edwin Perdew's delayed certificate of birth, dated Nov. 6, 1956, Joseph's middle name was listed as 'Edwin'. In the 1886, 1888, 1892, 1894 and 1898 Great (Voters) Registers of San Bernardino County, CA., the 1920 U. S. census, and his 1949 Ontario Cemetery Association receipt, he is listed as Joseph 'Edwin' Perdew.

Joseph Edward/Edwin Perdew was the 6th of 10 children born to:
Alexander Glenn/Garrison Perdew, b. 1829 in Marietta, Washington county, OH. and d. Apr. 16, 1894 in Grapeland, San Bernardino county, CA. &

In the Jul. 14, 1880 U.S. census, 18 yr. old (Joseph) Edward Perdew, a laborer, b. in CA., was living in Martins, San Bernardino, CA. with his
50 yr. old father, A.G.(Alexander Glenn) Perdew, a farmer, b. in NY.

3 yr. old brother, Albert Perdew, b. in CA.
Both Alexander's & Della/Sarah's parents were 'b. in NY.'
Living next door were Alex's son, Rufus Putnam Perdew and his wife.

1889 - The San Bernardino City and County Directory listed J.E. Perdew as a viticulturist.

On Jan. 16, 1890, according to San Bernardino County Marriage records, 26 yr. old Joseph E. Perdew, b. in CA. and a resident of Grapeland & 17 yr. old Nettie Henderson, b. in CA. and a resident of Grapeland, were married in Grapeland, San Bernardino Co., CA.

Excerpt from: KILLED AT A CROSSING
IT STRUCK THE BUGGY
The train was in charge of Engineer Wright A. Baldwin, with Fireman J. A. McFarland also in the cab. The accident occurred on the fireman's side of the engine, and McFarland thought the engine did not strike the vehicle, but that the horse plunged down the embankment, throwing out the occupants of the vehicle. The buggy wheel does not show the damage that would be expected to be caused by a collision with a locomotive, but there are several eyewitnesses who say that there is no doubt about the fact that the engine struck the buggy. William Henderson and J. E. Perdew were whitewashing a fence within 20 feet of the crossing, and saw the collision, and they say they cannot be mistaken about the engine striking the vehicle.

Perdew, Miss Josephine Delor, Miss Lottie Delor, Miss Maggie Henderson, Will and Arthur Henderson (and 11 others).

From a newspaper article, entitled:
PERDEW (misspelled 'Perdue') HERD IS DECLARED WINNER
To J. E. Perdew and sons, dairymen just below Eli Street on South Euclid Avenue, go the honors for having the blue ribbon herd for District No. 2 in California during the last four months. April, May, June and July found the Perdew (Perdue) herd the highest in the district, which takes in all this valley.
During July, Perdew had the high cow for butter fat for the district, the milk testing 70.3 B.F.M. The district average runs around 25 and the state average between 20 and 25, so it is seen that his cow ranks high.
Perdew's herd averaged, for the three months, about 30 B.F.M.
District No. 2 has led the state in high testing milk for the most of the time, and has never been below second place.
The herd is composed of Jersey and Holstein cattle, and is one of the finest in the state.

By 1926, most cabins included a bed, table, benches and water pitcher. The camps attract many poor Dust Bowl Migrants from Oklahoma and Arkansas. In the fruit-picking area, many workers lived at auto camps near the fields, looking for farm labor jobs advertised in bulletins sent by California farmers promising an abundance of farm work opportunities in the Golden State.
