Grace had an extraordinary life. She was the oldest daughter out of 13 children. She was born to Michael and Jennie DePompo in Staten Island, NY. She married Douglas Haas while he was stationed in Staten Island as a member of the US Coast Guard. They married on March 12, 1944. Grace gave birth to three children, Douglas II, Gilbert, and Jennie. While on Staten Island she owned and operated a Flower Shop.

Grace and Doug eventually settled in Iselin, NJ. Grace had 13 grandchildren whom she spoiled and took great care of. She enjoyed every moment with her children and grandchildren. She was a devoted Catholic and put her trust in God. Like all great Italian grandmothers, she is known for her outstanding and delicious Italian food.

She took great pride in her family and would always sacrifice herself to help others. She took pride in her home, too. There was a distinct feel to her home. The smell of "gravy" (sauce), the sound of Grace singing, the table leaf was in and ready for dozens of people, Golden Girls on the TV, grandchildren running up and down the split-level home, and the front door unlocked, ready for guests to make themsleves at home, even if only for a few hours.

Although she suffered from heart problems, and had open heart surgeries, she suffered most from dementia and alzheimer's. Grace was aware of her illness, and awaited her return home to God. During the worst of her illness, she would say, "I want to go home." Grace went home on February 3, 2005.
