Rogers, Major (Ret.) James L.

James L. Rogers Sr., Major, (Retired), U.S. Army, of Dothan, departed this life and answered the Lord's call on Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Flowers Hospital after an extended illness. He was 92.

Funeral services with full military honors are at 2:30 p.m. today, Sunday, March 22, 2009, at the chapel of Ward Wilson Funeral Home with the Revs. Bob Gross and Van Gauthe officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. Visitation is at Ward Wilson Funeral Home from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today.

Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, Attention Houston County, 2346 W. Main St., Suite 3, Dothan, AL 36301-1224.

Born March 3, 1917 in Wiggins, Miss., Major Rogers was the son of the late Asa Daniel Rogers and Ada Geneva Hudson Rogers of Hattiesburg, Miss. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His military commendations include the Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 10 year Device, the United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. He had lived in Dothan since 1983 coming from Atlanta, after his retirement from the U.S. Army and then a second career with Civil Service at Fort McPherson, Ga. Major Rogers was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Dothan and then Calvary Baptist Church of Dothan. He was also a Master Mason. He enjoyed playing golf, gardening, riding his bicycle and taking walks.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Helen Currie Rogers; his second wife, Marie Huddleston Scott Rogers; his brothers, Jack Rogers and Bill Rogers; daughters, Margaret Rogers Leggat and Deborah Scott Deavers; a grandson, James Anthony Rogers; and a great-granddaughter, Kynlee Scott Andrews.

He is survived by his son, James L. Rogers Jr., and daughter-in-law, Jacquelyn M. Rogers of Peachtree City, Ga.; granddaughters, Tiffany Rogers Samples of Peachtree City, Ga., Melanie Leggat Long and husband, John, of Buford, Ga., and Lindsey Deavers Andrews and husband, Jarod, of Cowarts; grandsons, Adam Gregory Rogers and his wife, Lisa of Thomasville, Ga., James Michael Leggat Jr. of Atlanta, David Dennis Leggat and wife, Kellie, of Kennesaw, Ga., Shannon Christopher Leggat and wife, Kim, of Buford Ga., and Joel Scott Deavers, Dothan; sons-in-law, James Michael Leggat Sr. of Atlanta, and Joel L. Deavers and wife, Tanya, of Dothan. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Addison Rogers, Ashlyn Leggat, Hannah Leggat, Allie Leggat, Hunter Samples, Avery Rogers, Tyler Leggat, Devin Leggat, Jacob Leggat, and Ry Andrews and numerous nieces and nephews.
