VETERAN MINISTER SHAY DIES

FORT GRATIOT TOWNSHIP -- The Rev. Adolph D. Shay, 80, once the youngest Baptist minister in Michigan, died Monday in the Evangelical Nursing Home.

Mr. Shay was ordained Dec. 15, 1925. His first assignment was in the First Baptist church, Flushing, when he was 24. He retired from the ministry in 1976 after serving for 51 years at various churches.

Mr. Shay served as a pastor in the Port Huron area beginning in 1930. He was pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, North Street Baptist Church, Gardendale Baptist Church and Calvary Bible Church. He was named pastor emeritus of Calvary Bible Church. He owned and operated Rox Ex Exterminating and Deodorizing Co., Port Huron, and served as a justice of the peace in Burtchville Township for more than 10 years. Mr. Shay organized the High Noon Toastmaster Club No. 1021 in 1951 and was the charter president. He received the Toastmaster International Highest Achievement Award in 1977. He also was member of many fraternal organizations.

Mr. Shay was born April 23, 1901 in Boyne City.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel, who he married Sept. 17, 1921 in Flint.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.
