Susanna Glenn Hockett –Susanna Elizabeth, daughter of J.T. and Rachel (Hobson) Glenn was born June 22, 1890 south of Union, in Marshall County, Iowa. She departed this life at her home near Union (in Hardin County) April 29, 1918.She moved with her parents when a small child to the home in northern Marshall county where she lived until her marriage. She attended rural Illinois Grove School in Marshall County and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.She was converted when 17 years old and joined the Friends church at Fairview later transferring her membership to Chester where she was active in the different departments of church work. She taught in the rural schools of Marshall and Hardin County for 5 years. She was married in Marshalltown September 9, 1914 to Ross Hockett. To them were born two children, Paul Milton and Mary Ardene; who with the husband; parents; sister, Mrs. Luther (Fannie) Steelman; brothers, John and David; many relatives and friends remain to mourn their loss.
Susanna Elizabeth Glenn (“Susie”) became a school teacher, teaching in country schools of the area. In the fall and spring, she would ride her horse from home to school which sometimes was about a seven-mile ride.Susie married Vincent Ross Hockett September 9, 1914. Ross was born January 27, 1890 near Union, a son of Joseph Luther and Alwilda “Allie” (Rubottom) Hockett. Susie and Ross had two children: Paul Milton born September 16, 1915 and Mary Ardene November 19, 1917.Susie became ill with pneumonia and passed away suddenly in April 1918. She is buried in the Chester Cemetery near Union, Iowa.After Susie’s death Ross married Hester Isabelle Smitherman September 7, 1923. She was born in Yadkin County, North Carolina February 18, 1897, a daughter of Robert Shele and Elizabeth (Spillman) Smitherman.
