Mary's father, John Page, was killed by Apache Indians. A few months before her birth, her mother survived capture by the Apaches.

Mary was 16 when she married prominent local physician, Dr. John Handy, who turned out to be a Jekyll / Hyde. They had 5 children and after 12 years of an abusive marriage, Mary divorced her husband.

Her lawyer, Frank Heney gunned the doctor down in a duel and was exonerated because he said he was attacked.

Mary died a year later of cancer having not seen her children for two years as her husband had sent them to live in San Francisco with his mother.
