Son of Delward & Winifred Fagen Kaufman, he was the second eldest son out of a family of seven & was raised on a farm in Wasco & Marion Counties, Oregon. He served with the 2nd Infantry Division in Patton's 3rd Army during WWII at the Battle of the Bulge & elsewhere as well as two tours in Korea; once during the Korean conflict & later as part of peacekeeping forces afterwards. Prior to serving his country, he worked on the construction of state highways in Washington state. Afterwards, he worked as a cop, in construction & several other capacities. He married Beulah Mae Houston Johnson by proxy on 15 July 1965 in Temple, Bell Co., TX. (He was serving on his last tour overseas in Korea as part of a peacekeeping mission at the time). He spent a total of 20 years in the military & attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his return to the states, he worked many years for a foam company in Temple. After retiring, Fred & Beulah moved to Hugo, Choctaw Co., OK to begin farming in their sunset years. Fred raised chickens, hogs, guineas & rabbits in addition to maintaining two gardens. He enjoyed fishing in his spare time. After his wife's death, he continued living alone on the farm with a host of friends to look after him in his declining years. He died of congestive heart failure on Apr 22, 2003 at the age of 81.
