"Mr. Ellis our blacksmith, who has been sick, was out on the street Wednesday, but was taken worse toward night and died Monday evening. He was a Woodman and that society hired Andy Thompson to care for him. Mrs. Anna Ellis' father, Peter Krall, of LeMars came out Thursday and her sister was also with her to the end. THe funeral was held Wednesday at the Baptist Church in Le Mars under the auspices of the Camp of Modern Woodmen."
It was said that Edwin Ellis was powerful enough to drive a nail with his bare hand.
