William T. Bell, 74, who worked for the National Geographic Society for 37 years before retiring as a vice president in 1984, died of congestive heart failure July 9 at the Beford Court nursing home in Silver Spring. He lived in Bethesda.
He joined the magazine in 1947 in its addressograf division. He later became an assistant secretary and then associate secretary of the National Geographic Society before becoming vice president. He was a in charge of building services.Mr. Bell, who was born in Hackensack, N.J., came to Alexandria as a youth. He attended the Episcopal High School and graduated with a degree in international relations from Yale University, where he was starting quarterback of the school's 1940 football team. During World War II, he served with the Navy in the Pacific and earned the Silver Star.He had been a dinner committee chairman of the Alfalfa Club and a member of the University and Chevy Chase clubs. His hobbies included golf.Survivors include his wife, Billie Byrd Bell of Bethesda; a son, William Jr., of Stockholm; and three granddaughters.
