Carl was born in Hamlin County, South Dakota.
In 1914, he married Dora Etta West, daughter of William and Grace (Prouty) West. They rented a farm by Lake Marsh from one of Carl's uncles, later renting a farm from one of Dora's uncles.
In 1929 they moved to Sandpoint, Idaho but they eventually moved to Bothel, Washington. They were married over 50 years. They had four children: Garold A, Myrtle V, Evelyn D, and Clinton H. Hanson.
Carl died September 28, 1968 and is buried in Pacific Lutheran Cemetery in Seattle Washington.
