Hon. Justice Joseph Paul Albright Sr., age 70, of Parkersburg, passed away March 20, 2009, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

He was born in Parkersburg on November 8, 1938, the son of the late Melvin P. (Jinks) Albright and Catherine A. Albright. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1956 and earned his Bachelor of Administration degree, cum laude, from his beloved University of Notre Dame and his Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1962 from the Notre Dame Law School. At the Notre Dame Law School, he won the Webber Prize for Appellate Advocacy and was a member of the Notre Dame Law Review. He practiced law in Parkersburg and surrounding counties from 1962-2000.

Justice Albright dedicated his life to public service. He was elected to the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia in November 2000 for a 12-year term and served as Chief Justice in 2005.

Previously, in September 1995, Governor Gaston Caperton appointed him to an unexpired term on the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia and he served through December 1996. Since 1959, he has been an officer and director of Albright's of Belpre Inc., a family corporation which owns and operates Belpre Furniture Galleries, a retail furniture business with locations in Belpre and Parkersburg.

A former Assistant Prosecuting Attorney of Wood County and former city attorney for the City of Parkersburg, Justice Albright was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1970 and to six more terms commencing in 1974.

He served as Chair of the Education Committee (1977-1978), Chair of the Judiciary Committee (1979-1984) and as the 52nd Speaker of the House of Delegates in 1985 and 1986. He served on a number of public and quasi-public boards and commissions, including the Parkersburg Charter Board in 1969-1970. He was instrumental in the creation of the Blennerhassett Historical State Park and Museum.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Ann Deem Albright, the mother of his three surviving children, Theresa Louise Cavi (Peter), Loretta Kathleen Albright Muckley (Jon) and Joseph Paul Albright Jr. He was also preceded in death by their fourth child, John Patrick Albright.

He is survived by his wife, Nancie Gensert Albright and her three children, Susan Divvens Bowman (Tim), Deborah Divvens Rake (Kevin) and Sandra Divvens Fox (Jim). He is also survived by one brother, Fredrick Albright (Helen); 10 grandchildren, Joseph P. Albright III, Alexis Marie Albright, Ryan Christopher Cavi, Ruth Erin Bowman, Marshall Thayer Holcomb, Daniel Merritt Fox, Matthew Carr Fox, Valerie Ann Muckley, Daniel Jon Muckley and Scott Allen Muckley; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe was a dedicated family man and a wonderful father and husband. We will forever feel his trusted guidance and unconditional love. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitations were held from 2-4 PM and 6-9 PM on Monday, March 23, 2009 and from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, where a Rosary service was held at 8 PM on Tuesday, March 23, 2009. A Funeral Mass was hald at 10 AM on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Parkersburg. Father Eric Hall officiated. Concelebrants were Bishop Michael J. Bransfield, Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling - Charleston, Father Casey Mahone, who is a former pastor of St. Francis Xavier, Msgr. Edward Sadie, and Father Robert Park. They are both native sons of St. Francis Xavier Church.

Burial was held at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Parkersburg.
