Richard Baldwin Corcoran was the son of Patrick Corcoran and Catherine Baldwin. Patrick was the four term mayor of Clonmel.Richard immigrated in 1867 after irritating the British authorities who put a price on his head.
He spent time in New York, then Chicago, and returned to New York where he became the head of Wannamakers delivery stable. The adjutant at Ft Walla Walla recruited him to come and be the Veterinary Surgeon for the 1st Calvary Regiment.
Arriving at Ft Walla Walla in Nov 1878, the commander was Col. Cuvier Grover. Col. Grover was assigned temporarily back east and the executive officer took command. A dispute between Richard and the acting commander ended in Richard resigning in Nov. 1879. Col Grover returned in Nov 1880 and Richard rejoined the regiment in Jan !881.
During his hiatus from the army, he was traveling in Oregon by stagecoach, a fellow passenger was a young lady named Mary Elizabeth Howard. He began to correspond with her and after his return to the army they were married in Jul 1882.
Richard and Elizabeth's first child was born Jun 1883, Richard B, Jr. In Sep. 1884 Richard was transferred to Ft Custer, Montana Territory where in Dec. his second son is born, Patrick Grover. Early in 1886 he is transferred to "The Post of San Antonio" Tx. In Aug 1886 his third son is born, Frank Parnell. August of 1888 find the family moving to Ft Meade Dakota Territory. Where in Sep, Richard's fourth son is born, David Stanley.
A short time later he transferred to Ft Keogh, Montana Terr. And in 1891 to Ft Yates Dakota, Terr. He was stationed at Ft Yates until the Spanish-American War. The unit was sent to Cuba, and Richard claimed in a biography that he was the first trained Veterinarian on the island.
Richard returned from Cuba and was assigned to Ft Riley, Ks in Mar 1901. The unit he was assigned to was transferred to Ft Reno, Ok Terr in Jul 1901. His sons having a hard time getting to school he asked for a transfer to Field Artillery, and in Dec 1901 arrived at the Presidio of San Francisco. He spent the remainder of his time in the army at the Presidio. He received orders to the Philippines in 1910, and after being examined by a doctor deemed unfit for tropical duty. He retired in Mar 1911, having spent 31 years in the US Army.
He died 14 Mar 1916, and was buried at San Francisco National Cemetery on St Patrick's Day, 17 Mar 1916.
