ARNO SCHMEISSER

School Hill Man Hit by Pitched Ball, Dies
Schmeiser(sic) Dies an Hour After Being Hit-
Was at Bat and Ball Struck Him in Left Temple

Struck in the left temple by a pitched ball in a game between School Hill and Clover baseball teams Sunday afternoon, Arnold Schmeiser died from a brain hemorrhage an hour and a half after leaving the game. The blow on the head failed to fell Schmeiser, who was at bat at the time. He continued to play and at the end of the inning donned the mask, protector and pad and caught his usual game, playing about an hour.

He then complained of feeling ill and left the game going to his home, where death occurred at 5 o’clock.

Arnold Schmeiser was a graduate of the Manitowoc County Training School for Teachers and following his graduation adopted teaching as a profession. He held a position as teacher of the Rockwell School and took a keen interest in athletics, baseball being a hobby with him.

In the game Sunday, he was doing the receiving and it was early in the game when the fatal accident occurred. Schmeiser had stepped to the plate for his turn at bat. He failed to judge a fast high one right and was struck in the left temple by the fast traveling ball. The blow did not cause him to fall, but he held his head for a couple of minutes before the play was resumed. At the end of the inning he had apparently suffered no ill effects from the blow and he again took his place behind the bat. About an hour later he became ill and went to his home, where death occurred.

Last Saturday, Mr. Schmeiser had been in the city to assist in marking papers in the recent examination of teachers and school board members in the salary question.

He was twenty-four years of age and was born in Manitowoc County.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schmeiser and besides his parents is survived by two brothers, Herbert and Oliver and three sisters, Hildegarde, Mildred and Marion.

The funeral arrangements have not been made but service will be held at Louis Corners.
