Company E "Port Royal Guards" of Caroline County, 47th Virginia Infantry, Field's Brigade, Heth's Division, 3rd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence: Caroline County VA; a 28 year-old Manager.
Enlisted on 4/1/1862 at Fredericksburg for 12 months' Service, he was mustered into "E" Co. VA 47th Infantry as a Private.
AWOL May & Jun and July & August 1862 Rolls.
Present Sept thru Dec 1862 Rolls.
Court martialed 2/18/1863 for desertion: sentenced to 6 months' hard labor with ball & chain and to be transferred at end of term to another unit far from his home; hospitalized with acute diarrhea 3/6/1863 in Eastern District Hospital, Richmond; transferred 3/9/1864 to General Hospital, Richmond; confined 8/9/1863 Castle Thunder Prison, Richmond, VA. to serve sentence.
POW 5/24/1864 Hanover County, VA. near North Anna; confined 6/8/1864 Pt. Lookout, MD.; transferred 7/8/1864 to Elmira, NY.; died there of remittent fever.

The 47th Infantry Regiment was formed in June, 1861, with men recruited in Caroline, Middlesex, Essex, and Stafford counties.
