Matthew was the son of Mathew Vogelsang and Maria Von Bokern. After the death of his mother, his father moved the family from Louisville, Kentucky, to Rockport, Indiana, where he owned and operated a dairy farm. Matthew worked on his father's farm and learned the trade. In 1918 he contracted, but survived, Spanish Influenza. On 25 Feb 1919 he married Carrie Kersteins. They had no children. She died in 1945 and three years later on 15 May 1948 he married his second wife, Carrie Gager. They, also, had no children. Matthew was a lifelong dairy farmer. Matthew died of a broken neck and skull fracture sustained when the truck that he was driving hit a wet patch in the road and hit a utility pole. The truck overturned and he was killed instantly. Matthew was 65.
