Wesley was an oil and gas operator. He went to Pithole in January of 1865 during the oil boom at Pithole and left in 1866. He was a member of the Pithole Pioneers' Association. He set up an oil business in Pittsburgh in 1881 and became a wealthy man. One of his most successful ventures was the development of the Gould field in Butler county, at Wildwood, Pennsylvania, in November, 1890, a well producing four thousand five hundred barrels daily. In addition to his operations in the oil fields, Mr. Guffey made large investments in coal lands. He was a brother of Colonel James M. Guffey, famous in the oil and gas industry and in Democratic politics. Mr. Guffey was unmarried and lived in a magnificent house on the corner of Liberty and Atlantic avenues, Pittsburgh, over which a married sister presided.
