William Hood, civil engineer, son of Joseph Edward Hood and Maria (Savage) Hood. Civil War pvt. 46th Mass. Militia Inf. Graduate B.S. Dartmouth College 1867. Rodman Summit Donner Lake section Central Pacific Railroad, Asst. Engineer 1868 completing first transcontinental R.R. Chief Asst. Engineer 1875-1888 S.P.R. constructing road through Mojave and Colorado Deserts and through Arizona and New Mexico to San Antonio. Chief Engineer C.P.R. 1883, Chief Engineer 1885-1900 C.P.R. operating Central and S.P. lines west of El Paso. Chief Engineer S.P. 1900 until retirement 1921. Received Dartmouth College degree of Sc.D. in 1923.Former chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad, having retired in May, 1921. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College and began railway service as a rodman on the Central Pacific.
