His obituary reads: After an illness of two weeks, following an operation for ruptured appendix, Herbert A. Welch of Wayne, passed away Wednesday morning at 1 o'clock in a Norfolk hospital, aged 37 years. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 AM at the Presbyterian Church with Rev P.A. Davies and Prof. I.H. Britell in charge. Masons officiate at Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. Welch became ill on Tuesday, February 11, and was taken to Norfolk that night for an operation for Appendicitis. Complications developed and, though all possible was done by specialists, he did not rally. When it was thought that a blood transfusion might save Mr. Welch's life, more than fifty from the vicinity went to Norfolk to be tested in an effort to find one whose blood corresponded to his.
