Referred to by his friends as "Long Charlie", he was vitally interested in the growth and economy of Sabine County. He was a merchant, farmer and owned a sawmill. His interest in the growth of Sabine County was such that he personally hired a geologist to come from Pennsylvania to test for oil, gas and other minerals. He hired politicians to attend and speak at his annual July 4th picnics, which were held at his old home in Isla. These picnics were open to the public and were always well attended. His aim in thi was to improve the knowledge and friendship between the politicians and the people they represented. Charles lost heavily in the depression, and also in the Texas Land Bank, so much in fact, that on Feb. 9, 1930, he suffered a stroke, from which he died two days later. He was buried at the old Vickers Cemetery.
