Civil War veteran; he enlisted for the Union as a Musician in Company H, 19th Indiana Infantry, on July 29, 1861. This regiment was part of the famed Iron Brigade of the West, or "Black Hats Brigade," which fought in many of the major battles with the Army of the Potomac in the eastern theater. James Furgason was a native of Johnson County, Indiana at the time he enlisted. He was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.

...That from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain.
