On Thursday, September 27, 2007 at Salem's Veterans Hospital in Salem, VA, our beloved father and brother departed this life. Quietly and peacefully God called him home to his place of peace and rest.

Alvah Lee Thurston was born to the late Alvah and Geneva Thurston on April 30, 1929 in Louisa County, VA, the oldest of five children.

He joined the Mt. Gilliam Church (New Site) at an early age and attended the Louisa County Training School.

He later joined the U. S. Army and served faithfully during the Korean War Conflict.

He married Mary Earline Johnson of Montross, VA in December of 1952 and from this union eleven children were born. Alvah was a man whose character was shaped by strong Godly principles and values. He taught and instilled in his children a sense of commitment, conviction and obedience to God and his word. His love of reading afforded him a wealth of knowledge and fueled his love of adventure and appreciation for the wonders of God's creative nature. A large part of his life was impacted due to his military service, but it didn't diminish his love for God or his children.

Preceded in death by his wife Earline and his daughter, Doris.

Alvah leaves to cherish his memory, two daughters, Loris (Timothy) of Brandywine, MD and Sheila of Germantown, MD; eight sons, Larry (Anne) of Washington, DC, Alden (Yong) of Columbia, SC, Donnie (Johnetta) of Odenton, MD, Lonnie (Yvonne) of Montross, VA, David of Atlanta, GA, James of Richmond, VA, Carl of Lynchburg, VA, and Alvah, Jr. of Germantown, MD; two sisters, Virginia Lipscomb of Louisa, VA and Rachel (Tommy) Sullivan of Ft.
