Political leader. She was for years the most powerful female in modern Connecticut politics, serving as the second-in-command (officially and unoffically) to state Democratic party chairman John M. Bailey. As Bailey's most trusted political ally, she wielded great influence behind the scenes of the state Democratic party, distributing legislative patronage jobs and having a say in those considered for judgeships and commission vacancies. She became active with the Democrats in the 1930s, serving 40 years on the party's State Central Committee. She never had a desire to run for public office, preferring to help run party operations out of the spotlight. She served as party vice chairman from 1962 until her retirement in 1976. Along with Bailey and Governor Abraham A. Ribicoff, she is credited with building the state Democratic party to its prominence. Once honored by President Lyndon Johnson as the Democratic Woman of the Year, she was a member of the state Federation of Democratic Women's Clubs and the West Hartford Democratic Women's Club.
