Lester Eaton, was the son of Aaron and Ruth Walters Eaton. He was the fourth of seven children born to this union. Lester attended school in Baldwin Park, graduating from Covina Union High School in 1946. He began working at Hillgrove market during High School. He entered the Army in 1950, serving during the Korean conflict. After his discharge from the Army, he attended Mt. Sac and received his degree in business. He eventually bought the business from the owners and settled down to run the Market.
Les knew everyone in the neighborhood, no one was a stranger. He always had a pot of coffee on, and always had time to talk with anyone that cared to pull up a stool. He supported local schools, churches and sports teams.
He married and raised his family while running the little market as it was known. At one time, there was a barber shop on the back corner of the store, and an old-fashioned coffee shop in the front corner. He cut meat to order and delivered groceries to his customers that could not come into the store.
That all came to an end on Super Bowl Sunday, 1996. As the news spread through the community, the community came together to mourn the loss of their friend and neighbor, his loss was felt by all.
There was standing room only at his funeral, the church was full and people were standing outside. They started directing people to the graveside because there was just no more room for the mourners.
He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters and an infant brother. Left to mourn his loss , his family, friends and a community that meant the world to him. We carry him in our hearts ... Always.
