WILMINGTON, N.Y. -- Myrtle M. Gowan, 79, formerly of Saranac Lake and Wilmington, N.Y., died April 5, 2008, at Fletcher Alan Hospital in Burlington, Vt.
Myrtle was born June 7, 1928, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., the daughter of the late Walter John and Hazel Mary (Thew) Haselton of Wilmington. She was a direct descendant of the first settler and supervisor of the town of Harrietstown--Pliny Miller, as well as Apollas Thayer and Timothy Haselton; early settlers of Wilmington, N.Y., and Garret Thew, an early settler of Peru, N.Y.
A graduate of AuSable Forks High School and Plattsburgh Business Institute; she worked at the Wilmington Inn and Adirondack Daily Enterprise. She also worked as a housekeeper-companion to the elderly in the Saranac Lake area and as a curator at Whiteface Mountain visitor center.
On Sept. 7, 1949, she married Austin W. Gowan of Saranac Lake, in Baltimore, Md. To this union were born five children, Roger W. (Nancy) of Montana, Walter A. (Jeanice) of Texas, Bruce L. of New Hampshire, Linda S. (David) Carver of Utah and Scott T. Gowan--deceased.
Mrs. Gowan along with her husband established the Genealogy Committee of Saranac Lake, the forerunner of the present Adirondack-Genealogical Historical Society.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Daniel (Julie), Jonathan (Misty), Benjamin (Norma), Jeffrey (Beth) and Brian (Annie) Carver, Jennifer, Amanda, and Adam Gowan; three great-granddaughters, Emily, Kiara and Sarah Carver; and several sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
She was loved by her family and many friends and known for her kindness. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services are to be held at the Methodist Church off Route 86, in Wilmington, N.Y., Friday, April 11, 2008, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Joyce Bryson, officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Saranac Lake Free Library 100 Main St. Saranac Lake, N.Y., 12983, or the E.M. Cooper Memorial Library Rout 86, Wilmington, N.Y., 12997.
Burial will be in the Haselton Cemetery in Wilmington, N.Y.
