Joshua Allen Thomason, physician and plantation owner, son of James and Elizabeth Hendon Thomason, was born on November 10, 1810, near Athens, Georgia. The family moved when he was three to St. Clair County, Alabama. Thomason attended college at Columbia, Tennessee, and at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1837. On October 28, 1841, he married Emily Jane Fisher of Lowndesboro, Alabama, where he practiced medicine until 1854, when they moved to Huntsville, Texas. Allen is reported to have owned 128 slaves in 1860. Upon arrival in Texas he purchased 3,500 acres of land west of Huntsville and built a large home which became known locally as the White House. In 1861 the doctor built another residence which he named Oakland. Thomason lived in Walker County until his death on May 8, 1894. He was a Methodist. ~Handbook of Texas Online
