The grandson of Alexander Sharp, a private in the Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War. He graduated from Jefferson College, Pennsylvania and later graduated from the medical college at Philadelphia. He moved to Missouri before the 1850 census where he practiced his profession around the Saint Louis area. During the war, he was an officer in the union army and was the acting assistant surgeon at Cairo and Mound City. He was appointed postmaster of Richmond, Virginia in 1865. By May 1869, he was appointed the US Marshall for Washington, DC, a position he held throughout Grant's administration. He was promoted to major in the paymaster's department on January 26, 1877; the family moved to South Dakota. He was retired from the Army on July 20, 1889. Enjoying California during his previous trips there, he moved to the San Francisco area around 1897.
