Irby Compton Ellis, 91, former resident of Cleveland, died March 30, 2009, in Montgomery, Ala.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Ray Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Arinder officiating. Burial will follow in North Cleveland Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2009, at the funeral home.
He served his country as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Mississippi State University and he did doctoral work at Emory University, The University of Alabama and The University of Nebraska. He received his Doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Ellis, a retired Professor Emeritus from Delta State University, served as the head of the Division of Social Sciences. He was a member and held various offices in the Mississippi Historical Society. He was active in the Joint Council on Economic Education for the State of Mississippi. He was a member of several community service organizations.
Dr. Ellis was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
He was an avid RVer who loved to travel and make new friends. He loved staying in constant contact with his nieces and nephews and other family members.
Throughout Dr. Ellis' life, he made many very special and lifelong friends. A very special thank you to each of these individuals for their friendship. After moving to Alabama, his new neighbors Ed and Lou Tatum and Jim and Diane Sepan became a part of this special group.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie Shaw Ellis; parents, M.H. "Hicks" and Eva Compton Ellis; sisters, Vivian McKellar and Rowena Cook; brothers, Ben Ellis, Sr., Ham Ellis, Buddy Ellis and Howard Ellis.
Survivors include his daughter, Pat Ellis of Wetumpka, Ala.; his son Joe (Lisa) Ellis of Cleveland; and grandchildren Grant (Erin) Ellis of Seattle, Cole (Mary Tatum) Ellis of Nashville, Tenn. and Jennifer (Chris) Butts of Louisville, Ky. and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is very appreciative and grateful to all of the caring and kind caregivers who helped take care of Dr. Ellis. Especially Daisy Lewis, Claudia Roberts, Larrie Wilson and Debra Walden.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Grant Ellis and Cole Ellis; nephews John McKellar, Buster Ellis, Billy Ellis, Jeff Ellis, John Ellis, Bob Ellis and Milton Ellis. Honorary pallbearers are William F. LaForge, Larry LaForge, Aubrey Piner, Denton Jackson, Jon Shaw Moore, Kevlin Shaw, Jim Armishaw, Ed Tatum and Jim Sepan.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Bobbie and Irby Ellis Family Scholarship Fund at Delta State University, P.O. Box 3141, Cleveland, MS 38733
