Onie Sanders "The One & Onie" 1919 - 2009 On March 31, 2009, a celebration of life will be held for the family and friends of Onie Sanders. "Sandy" passed peacefully on March 24, 2009, and is now spending quality time with Pauline who passed in September of 2008. The "One and Onie" met the love of his life, Pauline, in Orange County and they married in 1947. They started a family in southern California and moved to a farm west of Mettler in 1952. Sandy raised cotton, sugar beets, melons, alfalfa, safflower, and potatoes over the next 22 years, and was very active in the community. He was on the Board of Trustees for the Maricopa Unified School District, Maricopa Wheeler Ridge Water Storage District, and Cal Approve Seed Association. He was actively involved in the activities of his family and he and Pauline loved to play golf, tennis and bridge together. Sandy and Pauline sold the ranch and retired to Southern California in 1974. They lived first in Dana Point, next in San Clemente and finally in San Juan Capistrano until 2006 when they moved to Bakersfield to be close to family. Sandy lived a life based on strong moral values and was well known for showing deep love and affection for friends and family. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed! Sandy was married to Pauline, his "best friend", for 61 years. He leaves behind three children, son, Greg and wife, Pamela; daughter, Candy and husband, John; son, Mitch and wife, Lena Mae; nephew, Leon Calkins; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Donnice, Jamie, and Benjamin; two "very special grandchildren, Angela and David; and four great- grandchildren. From 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. on March 31, a Celebration of Onie's life will be held at Greg and Pam's, at 1412 Corte Canalete, in Bakersfield. The family is greatly indebted to "Comfort Keepers" for the special love and care they showed to Mom and Dad during the last two years and to Varner Bros. Inc. for their continued support of our family during very challenging times. In lieu of flowers and in an attempt to find a cure for a devastating disease, please make donations to the local Alzheimer's Association .
