SPRINGFIELD - Dorothy Jean Guernsey Smith, 68, of Springfield died at 8:18 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center.

She was born May 19, 1940, in Mechanicsburg, the daughter of Clarence and Erma Beecraft Guernsey. She married Haskell E. "Hack" Smith on May 19, 1961; he preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. Smith, a resident of Springfield most of life, worked for many years for Illinois Bell Telephone as an operator. She and Hack then started their family and had 2 daughters, Sue and Sheri. She then left her job to help her husband run their business as co-owner of Hack's Deep Rock Filling Station on Clear Lake Avenue. On the weekends, she could be found at Shahane's Race Track, cheering her husband's car "Hack's Deep Rock #8" to the finish line as it won many races. Her most recent job was at Animal Crackers Day Care, where she loved playing with and caring for all the little ones. She loved children and was known as one of the best baby sitters in town. She worked in the nursery at Bunn Park Christian Church, where her family were members. She loved NASCAR racing and her eight beautiful grandkids.

Surviving are her daughters, Sheryl Jean (Buddy) Nizzio and Suellen Smith Troxell, both of Springfield; grandchildren, Kyle, Haley, Tabitha, Jared and Isabelle Nizzio and Kevin, Callie and Steven Troxell; sisters, Doris (Roger) Cullers and Dana Harbour; sister-in-law and best friend, Maryann Smith; brothers, Kenneth (Marylou) Guernsey, Phillip (Nancy) Guernsey, Gary Guernsey, Dennis (Judy) Guernsey and Dale Guernsey; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Aubrey (Pat) Smith, Sharon (husband, Frank) Mendoza and Leland (Anna Mae) Smith; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with Kenneth Guernsey officiating. Burial will be in Mechanicsburg Cemetery.

Memorials to the American Lung Association or Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Fund.

Dorothy passed away with many family members at her side. She will be missed by everyone whose life she touched.
